A small leak wastes thousands of litres a month — and in the Algarve water is expensive and scarce. Here is how to tell if you have one, and what to do.
The bucket test
Fill a bucket with pool water and stand it on a step. Mark the level inside and outside. After 24–48 h without using the pool, compare: if the pool dropped more than the bucket, you have a leak.
Where leaks appear
- Joints and cracks in the finish
- Skimmers and inlets — seals age
- Buried pipework — hardest to find without equipment
- Lighting — light niches are a classic weak point
Don't put it off
Beyond the water bill, a long-running leak can wash fines out of the ground under the pool and create far more expensive structural problems. Professional detection costs a fraction of a structural repair.
